Traveling along Willow Road in Northfield over the past year, drivers were sure to notice all the construction activity at Willow Park. It started with the approval of a 1999 Northfield Park District Master Plan, followed by over two years of planning, focus groups, meetings with various user groups and a series of public meetings. Then on July 5th, 2007 the trucks and tractors moved in to begin the renovation of the Northfield Park District's largest outdoor facility, Willow Park.
The goal was to create a park for the whole community, from young children to adults. The new park has something for everyone. Some of the new amenities are an eight-foot wide, half-mile accessible walking path around the park with five fitness stations, four new tennis courts, newly configured baseball and softball fields with new fencing and dugouts as well as two soccer fields all of which have sports lighting, an outdoor batting cage, and a 40’ x 40’ picnic shelter with patio. Environmental elements were also a large part of the project. The park now includes many native plantings and bio-swales, an environmental overlook area highlighting the stream and bank restoration work, and permeable parking along Wagner Road. Infrastructure was also improved with additional site drainage and a new irrigation system throughout the entire site.
The Northfield Park District would like to thank our community and user groups for their generous financial contributions to the project.
Please stop by “Willow Park, Where We All Love To Play!” soon to enjoy the new facilities
